Donkervoort Racing vice-European champion GT4 Supersports - participation in Dutch GT4 during finale

ALGARVE, 12-13 September 2009 – This weekend Donkervoort Racing again achieved top results during the final and deciding races in the FIA GT4 season 2009, which were driven on the Autodromo do Algarve, Portugal. Denis Donkervoort finished with a 1st and 2nd place with his white D8GT(4) and with this, became the vice-European champion in the FIA GT4 Supersports series. Due to some misfortunes in previous races in the season, the championship just slipped through Donkervoort’s fingers by just a few points. However, these results did lead to an invitation for a guest race in the Dutch GT4 on October 10th and 11th during the finale races at Zandvoort, The Netherlands.

Races
The driven Frenchman Stéphane Wintenberger managed a pole position in the Supersports series twice and a 5th overall time during the qualifications. Denis Donkervoort and Nico Pronk qualified with a 2nd and 5th place in the Supersports series respectively.
An explosive start of the D8GT’s belonging to Wintenberger and Donkervoort during race 1- for the last time from the Supersports grid behind the GT4 field – resulted in a 6th and 7th overall position after the first lap. Donkervoort then advanced even further and finished with a 3rd overall place and a 1st place in the Supersports.  Wintenberger obtained a 2nd place in the Supersports and an overall 7th place. Nico Pronk, who managed faced the KTM belonging to Athanasios Ladas, was visibly having fun at the track of the Algarve: “This circuit suits me very well and I have enjoyed the fight with my direct competitors enormously!”
In race 2, Donkervoort Racing attempted once again to obtain a top 3 classification by means of a puzzled out pit stop strategy. However, a too short pit stop (a mere 0,3 sec) resulted in a stop-and-go penalty. The top overall classification therefore went up in smoke. Wintenberger won the Supersports series and Denis Donkervoort finished with a second place. Nico Pronk once again finished fifth.

End of the season
After a fluctuating season, in which an unjust disqualification, a racing incident with large consequences and a punctured tire played a lead role, the second place in the GT4 Supersports was the maximum that could be achieved. A third and fourth place in the championship respectively also shows the potential of Wintenberger and Pronk for next season, in which Donkervoort Racing hope to enter four cars.

After last years training season, Donkervoort Racing participated for a full season this season. The target: a top 3 classification in the Supersports series. This season, the Supersports series were still driving on grooved slick tires and had to start behind the GT4 field. Despite this disadvantages, Donkervoort Racing aimed for overall top 5 classifications. Especially since the FIA has committed to making no difference between both GT4 series any more next season, it was of great importance to show Donkervoorts potential.

Dutch GT4
During the finale races of the Dutch GT4 at the Circuitpark of Zandvoort, The Netherlands, at October 10th and 11th, Donkervoort Racing will get its first chance to compete against the established GT4’s in the 2010 format. Famous Dutch driver Peter Kox will drive in one of the three participating D8GT’s, along with Nico Pronk. The other two D8GT’s will be driven by the French Stéphane Wintenberger and Denis Donkervoort.

Will Donkervoort Racing succeed in obtaining a podium place as a full-fledged GT4 participant?
